Although our satellite navigation in the car has most of the world maps installed, searching for addresses or a place can be impossible in countries such as Thailand or Malaysia where either the street names confuse the device or when the language, to us, is difficult to make sense of. After trying a few different methods, we have found a way that accurately navigates you to the desired address.

We mainly use this when navigating to a hotel or point of interest which we would normally find on Goggle Maps or on our mobile devices.

Instead of searching for a place name on your GPS device, search using the GPS Coordinates. Depending on your device this could be: DD (decimal degrees); DMS (degrees, minutes, seconds) or Lat,Long.

We use DD (decimal degrees) which is made up of Latitude and Longitude and looks like this: 40.741895 -73.989308

To find the Coordinates on Google Maps on a computer or mac is easy, right click anywhere on the maps and select “What’s Here?” A small box pops up from the bottom of the screen with the coordinates, type these into your GPS and off you go!

On a mobile device it requires one more step, find the point of interest (hotel, address, park etc.) then select the address and copy it using the device, open your mobile browser (safari, chrome etc) and head to https://www.gps-coordinates.net/ – From here paste your address into the “address” tab or search from scratch in this area and then select “Get GPS Coordinates”. A map should plot your point of interest and will display the exact GPS Coordinates. Simply enter this into your GPS device and off you go!
